The Balfour Award contains three levels of distinction: chapter, province and international. The process of conferring the different Balfour Awards is progressive, as an award winner progresses from one level to the next. Each chapter selects its own Chapter Balfour Award winner using the criteria that they feel results in the selection of their “most outstanding graduating senior.” The chapter can recognize a brother who has graduated in December, or who will graduate after the spring or summer term. Either way, the selected brother must graduate in the current academic year.Read more

Mike Hylton (1945-1998) A man of great character and steadiness, Mike faced some of the most physically daunting and mortal challenges that people with severe hemophilia could encounter. During the blood crisis of the 1980s, Mike met the challenges with class and a concern for others not only in the bleeding disorder community, but also those affected with HIV. He was a thoughtful, analytical and spiritual individual – patient and tolerant of others, but certainly willing and capable to express his opinions and beliefs. While some felt it was more important to speak, he knew that it was more effective to listen. Mike found great comfort in his faith and family.Read more

Born with severe hemophilia when treatment for people with bleeding disorders was nonexistent predisposed Ron, as with many of his generation, to a lifetime of pain, struggle for better care, and the fight against stigma and prejudice. Ron endured challenges and faced each with grace and an air of, “I can handle that, no problem.” He exemplified the meaning of compassion towards others and practiced more than preached what it meant to be an advocate. He was a great friend and a trusted source of advice and wisdom. Ron’s commitment to the bleeding disorder community was surpassed only by his love for his family.Read more

$1000 scholarship for MEN with hemophilia. Tim Kennedy (1962- 2011) Those who knew Tim remember his ability to make most anyone smile and share a hearty laugh. Though life had dealt him a rough hand, Tim kept an air about him that was truly inspiring. As a father and husband, the love he showed his two children and wife knew no bounds. As a friend, he was always ready to listen, share and comfort – most often with his signature sense of humor. One $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a to a male ethnic minority undergraduate or graduate student who is enrolled in a Tennessee college or university and who is preparing to become a teacher.Read more

This award annually recognizes star qualities in a male high school senior or college student who competes in the sport of bowling. Star qualities include distinguished certified bowling performance on the local, regional, state and national levels, academic achievement and extracurricular and civic involvement.Read more

The Alpha Phi Alpha African American Male Scholarship was created by the Beta Theta Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity as a scholarship endowment that would to encourage young African American men to excel academically and pursue a four-year college degree. Applications are available to African American males living in Durham County, North Carolina. The nominee must be a registered, active member of a Boy Scout Troop, Varsity Scout Team, or Venturing Crew Chartered to an American Legion Post, Auxiliary Unit or Sons of The American Legion Squadron or, be the son, grandson or great-grandson of a Legionnaire or Auxiliary member in good standing. Eagle Scouts still in high school who reached their 18th birthday during the nomination year remain eligible if otherwise qualified. 2021 Nomination forms are made available to all American Legion Post Commanders, Adjutants, Sons, Auxiliary Department and Eagle Scouts the first week in December of each year. The individual selected as The American Legion, Department of Tennessee Eagle Scout of The Year will receive a $3,000 scholarship and will compete for $10,000 at the American Legion National scholastic scholarships.Read more

Applicant must be either a registered active member of a Boy Scouts of America unit that is chartered to an American Legion post, American Legion Auxiliary unit or Sons of The American Legion squadron or a registered active member of any chartered Boy Scouts of America unit and have a parent or grandparent possessing up-to-date membership in The American Legion or Sons of The American Legion or American Legion Auxiliary, and in the case of a recently deceased member, their membership for the year immediately prior to the current year may be used. Applicant must have received the Eagle Scout Award, received a Scouts BSA or Venturer Religious Emblem. This scholarship is awarded in recognition of academic achievement with a Grade Point Average of at least 3.0 or higher and must be at least a sophomore or above, and recognizes outstanding leadership within the chapter, having served as Recruitment Chair, Prytanis or other major officer position in the chapter, and a leader in IFC or other campus organizations. The applicant must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in political science or government, and have a goal to serve people in a political or governmental service position.
