30 of the best scholarships for college students you should know about

For most students, paying for their college education will involve a combination of personal and family funds, financial aid from the state or federal government, student loans, and scholarships provided by the institution they attend.
In addition, students can compete for dozens of scholarships funded by private foundations, government agencies and other organizations. In many cases, the stipends from these awards are very generous and will cover the winners’ entire cost of education.
In this article, we describe the 30 best scholarships to apply for. Most of these scholarships are very competitive, in some cases requiring a nomination by a faculty member or other school official. Some of the programs consider a student’s financial need as a criterion; others are based solely on academic achievements.
We organize the scholarships in three categories: those for students entering college, those for current undergraduates, and those for students finishing their BA/BS degree who intend to go on to graduate school.
For each scholarship, we provide a link that gives additional information about the program, including eligibility requirements, application deadlines and other guidance, and the amount of the scholarship awards.
